My First Triathlon Checklist

So you signed up for a triathlon. Welcome to the chaos. Three sports, one race, and approximately 47 things that can go wrong before you even hit the water.

The good news? Most of it comes down to showing up with the right gear. Here's the no-fluff checklist I use, broken down by discipline.

Swim

  • Goggles
  • Swim cap (usually provided by the race — confirm beforehand)
  • Speedo/tri shorts
  • Wetsuit (if water temp warrants it — check race rules)
  • Towel

Bike

  • Helmet (mandatory — no helmet, no race)
  • Water bottle
  • Gel pack / nutrition
  • Sunglasses
  • Bike repair kit (tube, CO₂ or mini pump, tire levers)
  • Cell phone (for emergencies)

Run

  • Race shirt with bib number attached
  • Socks
  • Running shoes
  • Visor or hat
  • Hand towel
  • Sunscreen

Admin / Logistics

  • USAT membership card + photo ID
  • Check tire pressure the morning of
  • headlamp (it will be dark when you get there)

Quick Reminders

Wear slides to the transition area. You'll be walking on pavement and grass — protect your feet before the race starts.

Remove rings and jewelry. Especially in the swim. Seriously.

Bring a towel or race bag to set your gear on in transition. Everything you need for bike and run lives in T1/T2 — keep it organized.

Check tire pressure the night before or morning of. Don't learn what a flat tire in transition feels like on race day.

Arrive Early Parking will fill up early and it will be dark. People show up very early to setup.

This list won't win you a podium spot — but it'll make sure you're not scrambling in the parking lot at 5am. Modify it as you gain experience. Add what works, ditch what doesn't. The best checklist is the one that's yours.
